Guru Shri. Bhaskar Menon

Shri .Bhaskar Menon wasborn in Ahmedabad on 13th October 1945. Showed precocity in dancing from the tender age of five. He joined the Kerala Kalamandalam the prestigious Kathakali Gurukulam of Kerala at the age of 8. He had the good fortune of learning under great kathakali acharyas like Padmashree. Shri.Kunchu Nair, Shri. Ramankutty Nair, Shri. Padmanabhan Nair. He graduated from Kalamandalam in kathakali in 1960 and thereafter won the Government of India Scholarship in 1962 and trained and performed with Kavangal Chattunni Panicker. There after trained in Bharatanatyam under great legendary Guru. K.P.Kittappa Pillai from the Pandanallur Quatret and Kuchipudi under Guru.Shri. C.R.Acharyalu .

As a Teacher

Thereafter he started his career us a performing artist. With wife Smt. Radha Bhaskar who herself was performing artist and teacher, established Mudra School Of Indian Classical Dances in 1973 in Ahmedadad, inaugurated by then Governor Of Gujarat late Shri . K.K.Vishwanathan , to serve the cause of classical dance. A dream institution for the couple to propagate and teach Indian classical dances to every class of society in Gujarat. At present Mudra is training around 900 students and have presented above 600 Arangetrams of students. Mudra has branched out to 4 places in Ahmedabad and 1 branch at Mehsana. Currently students from all over Gujarat, India and abroad take training in 4 classical dance forms namely Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi and Kathakali under the able guidance of the Guru's. Shri Bhaskar Menon is one of the members of the selection committee for gradation program with Ahmedabad Doordarshan. Today Mudra School of Indian classical Dances has merged to a well known name in Gujarat and India , as one of the rare institution where in students are trained in Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, Mohiniattam and kathakali under one roof preserving its purest form under his Chairmanship.

As a Performer

Has performed all over India, Europe, United states, Japan and Sri lanka . To name few major dance festivals Diamond Jubilee Celebrations of Kerala Kalamandalam '91', Millennium Dance Festival in 'Kankaria 2000', Uttaradh Festival Sun temple , Modhera, Gujarat. Vibrant Navratri'09' ,Sur sringar samithi, Kalidas Sammelan , Doordarshan Mumbai and Ahmedabad , Haridas Sammelans,etc.

Honours and Awards

Highest state award received by an artist by Gujarat Government and Gujarat Sangeet Natak Academy for his outstanding contribution and promotion of Indian classical dance in Gujarat with "Gaurav Puraskar" by former Cheif Minister of Gujarat Late . Shri. Chimanbhai Patel

The couple have been given the title of "Nritya Jyoti" by Swami Shree Sivananda founder of Divine Life Society (Rishikesh) in appreciation for the devine dance performance.

As a choreographer

As choreographer he has composed several dance ballets fusing four classical dance styles. Most of the dance production at Mudra which has been acclaimed by press and media was presented under his guidance. His 'Srisht, Stithi, Samhara", Dashavataram, Kalidasa's Meghdootam, Bhasmasura Mohini are still a very unique and strong productions, which is still being enjoyed and appreciated by the audiences today.

In short Shri. Bhaskar Menon is a reknowned Guru, Nattuvanar, Perfromer, choreographer and above all an able administrator too which has won him accolades from all Medias.

Born on 15th April, 1977 . Born in the family of Guru‟s Shri. Bhaskar Menon and Smt. Radha Bhaskar showed interest in dance and percussion from tender age. Started learning Bharatanatyam under father Guru.Shri Bhaskar.Menon at the age of Five and performed Arangetram on 28th August ,1988. He is trained in kuchipudi by mother Guru.Smt Radha Bhaskar and specialised training under legendry Guru Shri C.R.Acharyulu. Trained in kathakali under Guru. Bhaskar.Menon and Guru Talavady .Gopi (Kerala).

Mudra school of Indian Classical Dances and Mudra Institution for Performing Art‟s is one of the leading Institutions of Gujarat. It is the only Institute which train‟s students in four classical dance styles to preserving perfection of each style under one roof in Gujarat. Mudra today has branched out to four places in Ahmedabad and Mehsana with a strength of around 900 students. He completed his M.A in dance (Nritya Alankar) from Bruhad Gujarat Sangeet Samiti. Started his career as a dance teacher in Mudra School of Indian Classical Dances at a young age and today is training hundreds of students in 4 centers in Ahmedabad and Mehsana branch . He is one among few teachers who train students for B.A, Dance (Nritya Visharad) and M.A , Dance (Nritya Alankar papers1&2) conducted by Bruhad Gujarat Sangeet Samithi wherein many students have ranked first in Gujarat. Also rendering honourary services with the samithi as dance examiner for the senior practical and written exams conducted by the samithi every year. Many of his student‟s have performed there Arangetrams and are being trained by him in various specialized fields of dance . As a part of promoting Indian classical dance many foreign students are being trained at Mudra by the Gurus and today several students around the globe are being trained through E teaching under these Gurus.


Now as the Director and Guru of Mudra he is the leading performing male dancer of Mudra performing wing. He is also the very few male dancer‟s of Gujarat. He has performed all over India and accompanied a dance troupe to Frankfurt, Germany as a percussionist and a dancer and gave several performances. He is a graded artist of Doordarshan Ahmedabad for Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi and has performed many times with Guru-parents and Mudra performing wing in the Ahmedabad Doordarshan . Performed for various prestigious Sammelans to name few Diamond Jubilee celebrations , Kerala kalamandalam , Millenium Fest 2000 at kankaria, Uttaradh Festival at Sun Temple , Modhera, Gujarat State Sangeet Natak Academy programmes and Dance festivals, "Aaj ke kalakar" , he along with his performing wing performed at Irinjalakuda Dance Festival , May 2002 , Varshotsavam 2006 , worked as Artisitc director for Vibrant Navratri years "09‟ and "10‟ for Gujarat Government and currently worked as special senior artistic Director for Rann Utsav 2010 by Gujarat Government to name few. Ananth Menon and performing wing of Mudra have been invited to perform for MahaShivratri Utsav at Somnath , 2011 by Gujarat Government as a part of Swarnim Gujarat celebration.

He has conducted and participated in dance workshops conducted by senior Guru‟s of Mudra at various universities and institution‟s. Also in the panel along with senior Guru‟s giving workshop on Bharatanatyam for CCRT, Udaipur every Quaterly.

As a choreographer has composed dance ballets like "Srishti, Stithi ,Samhara", Ashata Nayika , Dasavataram fusing three classical dance styles. He has also choreographed dance items on various kriti‟s .Recently composed and participated for a show fusing Carnatic and Hindustani classical music.

From tender age started learning Tabla and won prizes and praises for dance and percussion competitions at school level. Had rigorous training in mridangam under Shri. Sreenivasan and now rendering services as professional mridangist & Tablist, Gannjira for dance performances, music concerts, in the AIR and Ahmedabad Doordarshan. Apart from a percussionist he is a Nattuvanar also.

Helped in publication of book "ANANTA NRITYAM" by Guru-parents with Sister Aparna Kiran. In short Shri.Ananth Menon is an Excellent Guru, Performer, Choreographer, Percussionist and a Nattuvanar which has won him accolades from all Medias.

Today Smt. Smidha Menon wife of Shri Ananth Menon also supports Mudra with the teaching wing . She took training in dance since childhood and today is a teacher training students , Comparing for shows and a part of the performing wing at Mudra.

Started training her training in dance from the tender age of five , bharatanataym under Guru and father .Shri Bhaskar Menon after completion of her course in Bharatanatyam she had her training in Kuchipudi from Guru and Mother Smt. Radha Bhaskar and further specialised training under legendary Kuchipudi Acharya Late shri.C.R Acharyalu . She learnt Mohiniattam from Mother and Kalamandalam Haimavati from Kerala.

As a Dancer


Today as a Director in Mudra she is training hundreds of students and has completed many Arangerams of students under her Guidance. She is the lead dancer of Mudra performing wing. She as woman lead has performed wherever Mudra troupe has performed. A creative choreographer , graceful dancer and as a artistic director she has done lot of work in creating new productions. Also a graded Artist of Ahmedabad Doordarshan for Bharatanatyam , kuchipudi and Mohiniattam. Today daughter Vaishnavi Menon the third generation of dancer is also assisting Aparna Kiran at Mudra .


As a Vocalist

An excellent and proficient singer of carnatic style Aparna Kiran had initial training in Hinudustani simultaneously took training in carnatic style under Guru. Smt. Vimala Parthasarathy. Today she renders her vocal support to dance, not only to Mudra but to also other dance teachers in Ahmedabad, Surat and other places. She awarded her voice for various devotional and dance albums. Married to Shri. Prem Kiran Menon an Engineer by profession but also a carnatic Violinist in Ahmedabad. He is not only a violinist but also a music composer and a music conductor. Mudra has a complete Music wing in the family.

Aspirations, Dreams, hopes and hard work blended with dedication have been responsible for the miles stone galore. One such aspirations and dream have led to the foundation of Mudra School Of Indian Classical Dances in Gujarat. It was hope and earnestness of Gurus Radha and Bhaskar Menon that led them to take the first step in order to fulfil their dream. There sincere and humble dream was to bring Indian Classical Dances to every individual who had inclination, interest and passion for the art, and should not be restricted and associated with only certain class of people of Gujarat. Mudra School Of Indian Classical Dances and Mudra Arts and Cultural Trust was Inaugrated on 27th, August1973 by then former Governor of Gujarat, Late. Shri.K.K .Vishwanathan. From that day on there has been no looking back for the founder Directors of Mudra .Today Mudra has branched out to 4 places in Ahmedabad and 1 at Mehsana. Mudra has grown with a current strength of around 900 students and a record of above 600 Arangetrams by the students. Mudra is ably supported by young, talented Guru's Shri.Ananth & Smt. Aparna Kiran Menon with their parents Smt&Shri.Radha & Bhaskar Menon . Mudra is one among very rare institutions teaching and performing 4 classical dance forms under one roof namely Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, Mohiniattam and Kathakali preserving its purest forms.

Guru. Radha Bhaskar born in Mumbai , hails from a family parampara of dancers and a family of six daughters to a veteran Bharatanatyam and kathakali Guru, late Shri.Krishna Panicker and Gowri Panicker. Educationally did her M.A English from Sophiya college ,Mumbai. Had the great opportunity to learn Bharatanatyam under Legendary and a very Renowned Guru.Shri.K.P.Kittappa Pillai, Kuchipudi under other legend Guru. Shri. Acharyulu, Kathakali under Shri. Nanu Pillai and Mohiniattam under Kalamandalam Kalyanikutty Amma in truly Gurukul pattern of training. And still maintains and teaches the traditional parampara to todays generation of students at Mudra. Thus bringing discipline of mind, body and good values needed to lead a proper life.

As a performer

Had the opportunity to perform in various cities in Gujarat and India. Performed for various Sammelans, Dance Festivals, Government of Gujarat programs, competitions and conferences. Dance workshop artist for CCRT , Udaipur in Bharatanatyam style. Artistic Director and a choreographer for Mudra performing wing. An ex.member of Gujarat Samgeet Natak Academy, Gujarat.

Research according to Radha Bhaskar is a never ending learning process which grows with age. Knowledge has no limit.
